First 2021 Girls Wrestling Tournament

On Friday night Lily Meyer and Maddy Gerholdt competed in the first wrestling match of the girls wrestling season. Tensions were high and the energy was perfect. There were at least 100 girls competing in a variety of different weight classes. All the girls were trying to crawl their way up to the top and secure themselves a 6 ounce of gold medal around their necks.

At the tournament, there were about eight different schools with a good amount of girls on each team. The smell of competition filled the air as all the girls fought to make an appearance on the medal podium. Everyone performed with high energy, all of their hard work had paid off, and they all did a fantastic job.

The night started off with lots of laughs and ended with even more. On the way to the match while in the van, the wrestler freshman Aidan Bowden, hyped up the girls up with music. Aiden attended the match to help Maddy warm up. The match was fun before, after, between, and during the matches. While Maddy and Lily were wrestling I took pictures and Aiden recorded the videos.

This tournament was incredible, and it was a lot of fun to attend. The gym was full and stayed full the whole time we were there. At the tournament there were about 8 different schools with a good amount of girls on each team. Maddy and Lily were getting excited to start their matches as they started to warm up.

Before Lily’s first match, Lily and Maddy warmed up with Aiden, then she stayed warmed up by walking around shortly before she had her first match. When her match started she got 4 points then got pinned. After the match Lily said, “I got pinned because I didn’t get her shoulders down right and didn’t hold her tight enough.”

In Lily’s second match, she was winning and kept getting her opponent down. Lily gave the other girl a bloody nose well in the match. She was winning until she got pinned. Lily even though she lost both of her matches she kept her head up high and kept smiling. Lily retained her positive vibe going the entire time we were at the tournament.

Maddy’s First match: Before Maddy’s match she warmed up with Aiden and Lily. She also stayed warmed up by walking around. When her match started, She was doing good then the other girl got a hold of her head and dragged her down and pinned her. But she kept her spirits up and kept her vibe going.

In Maddy’s second match, she went in confident and was doing very well. Then the other girl went for her head and arm again and took her down and pinned her. After the match Maddy said “I think I started off good but then the other girl went for a head and arm and that's when things went bad for me”

Both girls could have won the matches if they hadn't unfortunately been pinned because they both had more points at the beginning of the match. Lily and Maddy both got up, kept good spirits and held their heads up smiling. All in all even though the match didn't end in victory for our girls it was an exciting start to the season and we are all looking forward to what happens next.
